SILBIONE RTV – biocompatible addition-cure silicones for medical applications
SILBIONE® is Elkem’s premium product line of medical-grade silicones. All products in the family undergo extensive toxicological testing and meet the regulatory requirements of several countries: FDA, USP Class VI, ISO 10993 biocompatibility, and various pharmacopoeia standards. This makes SILBIONE the first choice wherever silicone comes into direct or indirect contact with the skin or is used in medical devices.
The curing mechanism is consistently addition-curing (platinum): no byproducts, high chemical purity, and no toxic byproducts during or after curing. All SILBIONE RTV products are sterilizable (autoclave, gamma radiation, ethylene oxide) and can withstand repeated cleaning cycles.
Inhibition Warning
Like all platinum-cured RTVs, SILBIONE products are sensitive to inhibitors. This is particularly important in a medical setting: Latex gloves completely prevent curing— use only vinyl or nitrile gloves without sulfur accelerators! Other inhibitors include sulfur-containing rubbers, amines, tin compounds, and epoxy hardeners.
SILBIONE RTV 4420 A + B in detail
SILBIONE RTV 4420 A&B is the higher-hardness variant of the medical-grade family. With a Shore A hardness of 20 (compared to 11 for RTV 4411), it delivers more robust medical components with higher tensile strength (5 MPa) and tear strength (15 kN/m)—but with lower elongation (650% instead of 1000%).
The low viscosity of 4,000 mPa·s (lower than 4411) makes the material even easier to degas and more flowable—ideal for fine geometries and thin layers. The longer shelf life of 12 months (vs. 6 months for 4411) is a practical advantage for medium-sized medical manufacturing facilities.
Areas of application
- Heel pads with enhanced stability (durable cushions under mechanical load)
- Toe separators with a corrective function (gentle shaping)
- Dental liners with more robust mechanical properties
- Other medical-grade silicone parts that require greater dimensional stability

Frequently Asked Questions About SILBIONE RTV 4420 A + B
Answers regarding high-hardness medical-grade silicone.
RTV 4420 is the higher-hardness variant: Shore A 20 (vs. 11 for 4411), tensile strength 5 MPa (vs. 3.8), tear strength 15 kN/m (vs. 12). However, it has lower elongation (650% vs. 1000%). The right choice for prosthetic liners with more robust mechanics, heel pads with dimensional stability, and toe correctors. RTV 4411 remains unbeatable under extreme elongation.
Anywhere the silicone component is subjected to mechanical stress: heel pads under body weight, toe corrections with light pressure, and prosthetic liners with a firmer profile. For liners that fit gently (no pressure), RTV 4411 is more suitable due to its greater elasticity.
Yes. All SILBIONE RTV products undergo the same toxicological testing and meet the same regulatory requirements (USP Class VI, ISO 10993, FDA). The differences lie solely in their mechanical properties.
RTV 4420 has a more stable formulation (higher Shore A hardness, less dependence on cross-linking agents), which reduces its susceptibility to aging. It has a shelf life of 12 months instead of 6 months at the same storage temperature (−5 to +30°C). For medium-sized workshops with moderate consumption, this is an important practical advantage.
