CAF 530 Black – a neutral, primer-free silicone sealant for electronics and solar applications
CAF 530 from Elkem is a one-component silicone elastomer with neutral, alkoxy-curing properties. This chemical characteristic fundamentally distinguishes CAF 530 from acetate-curing silicones such as CAF 30 or CAF 33: During curing, there is no acetic acid odor and—more importantly— no oxidation reaction with metals. This makes CAF 530 the material of choice for electronics applications with copper conductors and for solar modules, where chemical neutrality is critical over the product’s lifespan.
Another unique feature is its primerless self-adhesion to an unusually wide range of substrates: glass, aluminum, stainless steel, enamel, painted steel, cast iron, PA 6.6 (glass-fiber reinforced), polycarbonate, ABS, PBT, and epoxy-PES can all be bonded without a primer—each exhibiting 100% cohesive fracture behavior. For photovoltaic modules, Elkem has demonstrated that the adhesion between the junction box and the backsheet (PVF, PVDF/PET) remains above 90% even after 1,000 hours of a steam-heat test (85°C / 85% RH according to IEC 61215).
What is CAF 530 typically used for?
The primary application area is electrical and electronic systems where oxidation of copper contacts must be prevented—this is where neutral cross-linking offers a decisive advantage. In the automotive sector, CAF 530 is used to bond headlight housings and lenses, where sealing, UV resistance, and electrochemical compatibility are all required. In photovoltaic construction, CAF 530 permanently bonds junction boxes to backsheets (PVF, PVDF/PET) even under prolonged temperature and humidity stress. Other applications include general bonding and sealing in industry—anywhere metal and plastic components with different thermal expansion rates need to be permanently joined. CAF 530 is low-odor and therefore suitable for use in work environments where people are constantly present.
How should CAF 530 be applied correctly?
CAF 530 is ready to use and is applied manually from a cartridge or by robot to a clean, dry surface. Application to one side of the joint cross-section is sufficient—installation must be completed before the skin formation time of 10–15 minutes. The surface is tack-free after 40 minutes, and a 2 mm thick layer is fully cured after 8 hours. Due to its self-adhesive properties, primers are not required in the vast majority of cases. Full cure is achieved after 14 days. Installed components should not be subjected to stress for the first hour after joint formation.
Adhesion performance on various substrates
In the standardized shear strength test, CAF 530 achieves the following values after 14 days of curing: glass 1.3 MPa, aluminum AG3 1.2 MPa, stainless steel/glass combination 1.5 MPa, PA 6.6 with 30% glass fiber 1.3 MPa, polycarbonate, ABS, PBT, epoxy-PES each 1.2 MPa – all with 100% cohesive fracture. Other primer-free substrates include enamel, painted steels, and cast iron. For PV applications, the adhesion between the junction box and the backsheet in the damp-heat test (1000 h, 85 °C/85 % RH) remains at 1.20 to 1.08 MPa for PVF and at 1.10 to 1.05 MPa for PVDF/PET – an indicator of 20+ years of module life under open-field conditions.
Storage and Containers
CAF 530 can be stored for up to 12 months in its unopened original packaging at temperatures ranging from 2°C to +30°C—a shorter shelf life than that of acetate-curing silicones, because alkoxy-curing chemistry is more sensitive to traces of moisture. CAF 530 is supplied in 310-g cartridges, 25-kg drums, and 250-kg industrial containers.
SILITECH AG delivers the CAF 530 with technical support, a batch certificate, and shipping from its Swiss warehouse within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About the CAF 530 Black
Answers regarding the application, properties, and installation of CAF 530 Black Silicone Sealant.
CAF 530 is neutral-curing (alkoxy), while CAF 30 and 33 are acetate-curing (acidic). Neutral cross-linking means: no acetic acid release, no odor, and no oxidation of copper and other metals —crucial for electronics and solar applications. However, the long-term temperature resistance of +150°C is lower than that of CAF 30/33 (+250°C).
CAF 530 is a neutral, self-adhesive one-component silicone sealant designed for electrical and electronic applications involving copper conductors, for bonding automotive headlights, and for solar modules (junction box bonding). Its chemical neutrality prevents oxidation and corrosion of sensitive metals.
CAF 530 demonstrates primerless self-adhesion on an unusually wide range of substrates: glass, aluminum, stainless steel, enamel, painted steel, cast iron, polycarbonate, ABS, PBT, epoxy-PES, and PA 6.6 with 30% glass fiber—in each case exhibiting 100% cohesive fracture behavior. Normally, no primer is required.
CAF 530 is recommended for bonding junction boxes to the backsheets of solar modules. Aging tests according to IEC 61215 (1,000 hours of steam heat at 85°C / 85% RH) showed an adhesion retention of 1.08 MPa (from an original 1.20 MPa) on PVF film, and 1.05 MPa on PVDF/PET (from 1.10 MPa)—both with over 90% cohesive failure.
