CAF 30 White – flexible high-temperature silicone sealant for rail vehicles, ovens, and industrial applications
CAF 30 from Elkem is a one-component, acetate-curing silicone elastomer that vulcanizes at room temperature when exposed to atmospheric moisture. This white, non-flowing paste was developed as a flexible adhesive for industrial bonding and sealing applications. A key feature is its very high elongation at break of 500%—this allows CAF 30 to compensate for significant differences in expansion between different materials, such as those caused by thermal stress and mechanical vibrations.
With a Shore A hardness of 20 and a modulus of just 0.6 MPa at 100% elongation, CAF 30 is one of the most highly elastic sealants available. Temperature-resistant up to +250°C in continuous use, combined with excellent dielectric properties (dielectric strength 20 kV/mm, dielectric constant 3 at 1 MHz), the product covers a wide range of high-temperature and electrical insulation applications.
What is CAF 30 typically used for?
One of the most prominent applications is the sealing of side windows on rail vehicles: the combination of high elasticity and UV/weather resistance makes CAF 30 the proven standard in railcar manufacturing. Equally well-established is its use in heat sources such as furnaces, heat exchangers, steam circuits, and hot water systems, where sustained temperatures up to 250°C are easily tolerated. CAF 30 is also used for bonding HCR silicones (high-temperature-curing silicones), an application in which adhesion between two different types of silicone is critical. In the automotive, aerospace, rail, chemical, and general industrial sectors, the product is used for service and maintenance work when a flexible, weather- and chemical-resistant seal is required.
How should CAF 30 be applied correctly?
CAF 30 is supplied ready for use and can be applied both manually and by robot. The bead is applied to one side of a clean, dry surface; the parts must be joined within the skin formation time of six minutes. After assembly, the joint should not be subjected to stress initially. CAF 30 adheres to glass, enamel, ceramics, epoxy paint, polyester, and some metals without a primer. However, a primer is recommended for high humidity and heat on metals as well as on polyester. For stainless steel and aluminum, Primer PM 820 is the choice; for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Primer 131, and for ABS and glass-fiber-reinforced composites (PA, PES, PP), Primer PP 878.
Adhesive Performance and Fire Resistance Rating
In the standardized shear strength test on AG3 aluminum, CAF 30 achieves an adhesion strength of 1.5 MPa with 100% cohesive failure—the silicone fails, not the bond to the metal. According to the French standard NF F 16 101, CAF 30 is classified as Fire Class I 4 with a smoke and opacity rating of F2 —a critical feature for applications in rail vehicle manufacturing and public transportation, where strict fire safety requirements apply.
Storage and Containers
CAF 30 can be stored for up to 24 months in its unopened original packaging at temperatures between 2°C and +30°C (the translucent version for up to 30 months). The product is supplied in 310-g cartridges, 25-kg drums, and 210-kg industrial containers.
CAF 30 is supplied by SILITECH AG with technical support, a batch certificate, and shipping from our Swiss warehouse within 24 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions About CAF 30 White
Answers regarding the application, properties, and installation of CAF 30 White Silicone Sealant.
CAF 30 is a flexible one-component silicone sealant for industrial sealing and bonding applications. Its main applications include sealing side windows on rail vehicles, sealing heat sources (furnaces, heat exchangers, steam circuits, hot water systems), bonding HCR silicones, and service and maintenance work in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, and general industrial sectors.
CAF 30 is suitable for continuous use at temperatures ranging from −60°C to +250°C (as measured on a thick coating over 1,000 hours). Under short-term stress, the black version can even withstand temperatures up to +300°C, while the other colors can withstand temperatures up to +250°C. This makes CAF 30 suitable for applications near heat sources and in hot industrial environments.
Yes. CAF 30 is classified as I 4 (Fire Class) according to the French standard NF F 16 101, with smoke opacity and combustion gas classification F2 (in accordance with NF X 10 702 and NF X 70-100). CAF 30 therefore meets the requirements for use in rail vehicles and public transportation.
Cured CAF 30 has a Shore A hardness of 20, a tensile strength of 2.2 MPa, and an exceptionally high elongation at break of 500%. The modulus at 100% elongation is only 0.6 MPa, and the tear resistance is 5.0 kN/m. Tensile shear strength on AG3 aluminum: 1.5 MPa with 100% cohesive fracture.
