BLUESIL RTV 34xx Series – addition-curing mold-making silicones with a range of hardness levels

The BLUESIL RTV 34xx family is Elkem’s range of two-component, polyaddition-curing silicone elastomers for mold making and prototyping. All variants are platinum-cured and cure at room temperature without off-gassing —the mold shrinks only minimally (0.1%), the material is chemically and thermally resistant, and the detail resolution is in the submicrometer range.

The key difference between the variants is the Shore A hardness, which ranges from 12 (very soft, for pad printing pads) to 50 (hard, for durable production molds). Choose the appropriate variant based on your application:

Materials that can be cast include plaster, wax, polyester, polyurethane, epoxy, low-melting-point metals, and many other casting materials.

What's in this container?

Base component A (viscous liquid). Mix with catalyst B in a ratio of 100:10. 25-kg container of base component.

BLUESIL RTV 3450 in detail

BLUESIL RTV 3450 is the hardest variant in the 34xx family (Shore A 50) and the most popular choice for durable production molds. With a tensile strength of 5 MPa and an elongation at break of 300%, the mold experiences less deformation due to its high hardness and delivers consistent dimensions across many castings. Catalyst B is available in black or clear.

The QC (Quick Cure) variant reduces the pot life to 20 minutes and the demolding time to 4 hours—ideal for industrial production with multiple cycle rotations. The mechanical properties are identical to those of the standard 3450.

Typical applications

  • Durable production molds capable of producing hundreds to thousands of castings
  • Standard reproduction for plaster, wax, polyester, and low-melting-point metals
  • Small-batch industrial production with consistent precision

Catalyst color: Black or Clear

Both color options are chemically identical—the choice is based on aesthetics and practicality: Black produces a dark vulcanized material that makes details stand out under light; Transparent allows visibility through the mold, which is helpful for complex casting geometries.

Inhibition Warning

Platinum-cured RTVs are inhibited in trace amounts by:

  • Natural or synthetic rubber containing sulfur (natural rubber, NBR, neoprene gloves)
  • Metal-salt-catalyzed condensation RTV (tin)
  • Tin-stabilized PVC
  • Epoxides cured with amines
  • Certain organic solvents (ketones, alcohols, ethers)

Practical advice: Set aside a separate venting chamber for addition-cure RTV; if in doubt, conduct a preliminary test at a test site.

storage

Can be stored for up to 12 months in unopened original packaging at temperatures between −10°C and +30°C.

Frequently Asked Questions About BLUESIL RTV 3450 A (25 kg)

Answers regarding the application and processing of BLUESIL RTV 3450 A (25 kg).

All three are addition-cure silicones for mold making that differ in their Shore A hardness: RTV 3440 = 40 (medium-soft), RTV 3445 = 45 (medium), RTV 3450 = 50 (hardest variant). The higher the Shore number, the greater the dimensional stability over many castings—but with less elasticity for complex undercuts.

QC stands for Quick Cure. The QC version of RTV 3450 has a shorter pot life (20 minutes instead of 90 minutes) and demolding time (4 hours instead of 16 hours), while the final properties remain identical (Shore A 50, tensile strength 5 MPa). For series production with multiple cycle rotations per day.

Black and transparent are chemically identical. Black produces a dark vulcanized material in which surface details are more visible under oblique lighting. Transparent allows for visual inspection of the mold—which is helpful for complex molding geometries where there is a risk of air bubbles.

Base A in 1 kg, 5 kg, and 25 kg (plus 200 kg and 1,000 kg bulk containers available upon request). Catalyst B in 100 g, 500 g, and 2.5 kg (or 20 kg drums). The wide range covers all consumption levels, from hobbyists to industrial-scale production.
