BLUESIL RTV 34xx Series – addition-curing mold-making silicones with a range of hardness levels

The BLUESIL RTV 34xx family is Elkem’s range of two-component, polyaddition-curing silicone elastomers for mold making and prototyping. All variants are platinum-cured and cure at room temperature without off-gassing —the mold shrinks only minimally (0.1%), the material is chemically and thermally resistant, and the detail resolution is in the submicrometer range.

The key difference between the variants is the Shore A hardness, which ranges from 12 (very soft, for pad printing pads) to 50 (hard, for durable production molds). Choose the appropriate variant based on your application:

Materials that can be cast include plaster, wax, polyester, polyurethane, epoxy, low-melting-point metals, and many other casting materials.

BLUESIL RTV 3428 in detail

BLUESIL RTV 3428 is the variant with exceptional mechanical properties: tensile strength of 7.5 MPa, elongation at break of 600% (!), and tear strength of 20 kN/m. This makes RTV 3428 the top choice when a mold is subjected to maximum mechanical stress—in cases involving flexible geometries or numerous cycles. Its shelf life of 20 months is also exceptionally long.

Typical applications

  • Flexible molds with excellent detail reproduction and a long service life
  • Thermal Expansion Molds for Composite Materials in the Aerospace and Marine Industries – the silicone utilizes its high thermal expansion to apply pressure to composite laminates within the mold during curing (CLTE application)
  • Molds requiring multiple production runs (advertising material series, art objects produced in large quantities)

The three color options

Catalyst B is available in three colors: pink, white, and translucent. The color serves as an application indicator and determines the final product's appearance. Chemically identical, choose based on aesthetics or the visibility of the mixture.

Adjust hardness

Adding up to 10% BLUESIL FLD 47V50 silicone oil (based on A) reduces the mixture viscosity without significantly affecting the mechanical properties.

Inhibition Warning

Platinum-cured RTVs are inhibited in trace amounts by:

  • Natural or synthetic rubber containing sulfur (natural rubber, NBR, neoprene gloves)
  • Metal-salt-catalyzed condensation RTV (tin)
  • Tin-stabilized PVC
  • Epoxides cured with amines
  • Certain organic solvents (ketones, alcohols, ethers)

Practical advice: Set aside a separate venting chamber for addition-cure RTV; if in doubt, conduct a preliminary test at a test site.

storage

Can be stored for up to 12 months in unopened original packaging at temperatures between −10°C and +30°C.

The BLUESIL RTV 3428 A + B White Kit is supplied by SILITECH AG with technical support, a batch certificate, and shipping from our Swiss warehouse within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About the BLUESIL RTV 3428 A + B White Kit

Answers regarding the application and processing of the BLUESIL RTV 3428 A + B White Kit.

Incidentally, the combination of high elongation at break (600%) and tensile strength (7.5 MPa) also makes RTV 3428 a so-called thermal expansion former: The silicone uses its high thermal volume expansion (approx. 9×10⁻⁴ K⁻¹) to exert pressure on the composite laminate during curing in the autoclave. This results in bubble-free GRP/CFRP parts with complex geometries without the need for expensive vacuum bags.

The three colors (pink, white, translucent) are chemically identical. Choose based on your application: pink for good visibility of the mixture, white for a neutral appearance, and translucent if the finished part needs to be visually clear. All three offer the same mechanical properties.

Yes. Adding up to 10% BLUESIL FLD 47V50 silicone oil (based on the base material A) reduces the mixed viscosity and slightly lowers the Shore hardness—without significantly affecting the mechanical properties. At concentrations above 10%, the mold becomes too soft for most mass-production applications.

RTV 3428 has the longest shelf life in the 34xx family: 20 months at temperatures ranging from −20 °C to +30 °C. This is particularly important for workshops with irregular usage or for project-based applications in the aviation or boatbuilding industries.
